ANTELOPE VALLEY MODEL RAILROAD CLUB                               10 July 1998

Minutes of the July 1998 regular business meeting.


ROLL CALL

Members present: J. Beasley, R. Boone, T. Browning, D. Frozina, E. Jones,
H. Morris, N. Schultz, H. Veihdeffer, J. Wetzel and R. Wetzel.

Guests present: Mark Browning and Bobby Dennard.


CALL TO ORDER

Meeting was called to order by Mr. Beasley at 2034 hours in the Club car on
the AV Fairgrounds.


DISPOSITION OF THE MINUTES

Mr. Veihdeffer moved and Mr. Beasley seconded that the reading of the minutes
from the last regular meeting be waived and that they be approved as
corrected.  The motion passed unanimously.


COMMUNICATIONS

Mr. Frozina reported that three letters were received since the last regular
meeting.  One from the AV Bank (statement) and two from Driver and Associates
(insurance renewal).


OFFICER REPORTS

Secretary: Mr. Frozina reported that the July version of the roster was
distributed.  Also the sign up sheet for the 1998 Fair was up on the bulletin
board.  Each member is to sign up for five (5) shifts, two (2) of which must
be on a weekday.

Treasurer: Mr. Beasley reported for Mr. Crawford that we had money.

Publicist: Mr. Beasley reported for Mr. Veihdeffer, who reported for
Mr. Beckmann that our notice for our open house was seen in Model Railroader
and Railroad Model Craftsman.


COMMITTEE REPORTS

Construction: No report, but repair of the stairs is top priority.

Track: Mr. Beasley reported that Mr. Crawford fixed the bad track in the
helix and that he (Mr. Crawford) also replaced several bad switches.
Mr. Beasley also reported that he completed the yard lead and the caboose
track on the lower yard.  Mr. Morris reported that the turntable was in
place.

Wiring: Mr. Beasley reported for Mr. Crawford that all control buss wiring is
in; that the Tony (of Tony's Train Exchange) does not need the flat control
wire back.

Control: Mr. Beasley reported that we should soon receive the correct manuals
for the system we bought from Tony's Train Exchange.

Rolling Stock: Mr. Jones reported that 85% of the cars for the tank train are
in good order; that 15% of the remainder of the tank cars need more work, but
will be done by Fair time.

Scenery/Structures: Mr. Veihdeffer reported that he started another mountain,
this time using screen and plaster gauze.  He also reported that Mr. Morris
was able to acquire a power substation and transmission towers at a very
reasonable cost.

Housekeeping: Mr. Jones mentioned that the Friday before the Fair starts, we
need to do another cleanup of the club facility.


SPECIAL ORDERS

Mr. Browning has completed his 4-month probationary period.  After
Mr. Browning left the car, Mr. Frozina moved and Mr. Boone seconded that
Mr. Browning be elected to full (regular) membership.  Heated discussion
followed!  The motion passed unanimously.  Congratulations Tim!.

We welcome a new probationary member, Norm Schultze, to the Club.

Mr. Beasley proposed an amendment to the By-Laws, Art. II, Sec. 5, Par. 5,
No. 2, to change the wording as follows:

A member may be terminated by expulsion, only by the affirmative
votes of a majority of the eligible voting members, at a regular
business meeting.

Mr. Beasley explained the rationale behind the proposed amendment; that it
should be harder to get into the club that to be removed from the club.
Discussion followed.  The amendment passed unanimously.


UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Shirts: Item tabled.

Heater: Item tabled.

Metal Wheels: Item tabled.

Insurance: Mr. Frozina reported for Mr. Crawford that after an exhaustive
search, our agent was unable to find like insurance for less -- in fact, it was
substantially more.  Therefore we will renew our insurance with Driver and
Associates, the monies already being appropriated.

Timesaver Module: Item tabled.

Backdrop: No report.

Naked Wood: Mr. Veihdeffer reported that approx. 75% of the fascia woodwork
needing painting was primed, and that 20% was now painted in "Pullman
Green".  Mr. Veihdeffer encouraged all members to "grab a brush and paint".

Ballast: Mr. Veihdeffer reported that no green ballast was to be found.  The
new ballast scheme for the layout is as follows: gray and red on the upper
layout, gray on the bottom layout, and gray and brown for the branchline.

Business Card Train: Mr. Veihdeffer reported that he can get 30' MDC flatcars
from Palmdale Hobbies.  He has already "leased" two cars: one to the AV
N'Scalers and one to Palmdale Hobbies.  The lease is for one year, and those
cars will be run at all our public showings.

Club Logo Caps: Item tabled.

NEW BUSINESS

None.


ANNOUNCEMENTS

Mr. Morris mentioned that he heard that the AV Fair in 2001 will be held on
the new fairgrounds.  Talk followed on how we'll get the car over to the new
fairgrounds.

Mr. Veihdeffer mentioned that the first weekend of August there will be a
swap meet in Bakersfield, and that August 8 and 9 is the GATS at the Los
Angeles County fairgrounds.


NEXT MEETING

The next regular business meeting will be on Friday, 7 August 1998, at 2000
hours in the Club car.


ADJOURNMENT

There being no further business or discussion, Mr. Browning moved and
Mr. Jones seconded that we adjourn the meeting.  The motion passed
unanimously.  The meeting adjourned at 2108 hours.
